Uncertainty-aware mobility summaries

A future direction for showing what a sensing system does not know.

Proposal

Explore summaries that show observation coverage, confidence intervals and reasons for abstention alongside movement features.

Open question

Can such explanations help researchers distinguish sensor limitations from changes in behaviour?

Status

Conceptual proposal. No user study or clinical outcome has been demonstrated.

A possible research interface

A future research interface could show observation coverage alongside a feature estimate, explain why a model abstained and allow a reviewer to inspect the measurement definition. Any illustrative interface would need clear labelling so that synthetic examples are not mistaken for participant measurements.

Questions for a future usability protocol

  • Can readers distinguish no observation from no movement?
  • Do explanations help readers identify low-quality measurements?
  • Are confidence intervals understood without implying a diagnosis?
  • Can keyboard and assistive-technology users access the same information?

Dependencies before evaluation

Define the target users, intended decisions and potential harms. Obtain the necessary review before involving participants or sensitive data. Compare explanations against a simpler presentation and report misunderstandings as findings rather than treating a visually polished interface as proof of usefulness.
